There are local families who are referred to as "Old Flora." Some are descended from early settlers, some come from people who arrived in Flora as it began to prosper. Some came later when the town had become established. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were not only raised in Flora, but stayed. These are the people who developed the town and who remember the events and stories that make Flora home. As the elders pass away, some of this history is lost. Times change and the younger generations may move away. They may not know who the people in old family photos are, or where houses and buildings pictured stood. Memories of a past generation may end up in the dumpster. The goal of the Local History Digitization Project is to collect, identify, and preserve as many of these memories as possible.
The Flora Library is often the first place townspeople think of when trying to find a home for old family photographs, school memorabilia, Flora Centennial memorabilia, and other items of local interest. Over the years the library has acquired
a unique collection.
In 2015 the library was awarded a grant from the Carroll County Community Foundation for a Local History Digitization Project. Funds were used to purchase a scanner and laptop that are used to digitize the library's archive so it can be made accessible to the public online. Some of the materials in the library's collection have never been published.
The Flora Library will host a series of Scan-a-thons. A scan-a-thon is a sort of "digitization road show." People will be invited to bring in items of local interest, such as family photos. The library staff will do an information intake and scan the items. With the owner's permission, the images will be uploaded to this website. However, the Flora Library encourages people who would like to contribute to this project to bring items in whenever convenient. We also encourage donating these keepsakes to the library's archive.
