Where was The Blue Diamond? Where was the Little Tokio silent movie theater? What downtown building was once a funeral home? These questions and more can be answered by taking a stroll through downtown Flora. With a grant from the Carroll County Community Foundation and matching funds from Flora Psi Iota Xi, Flora Main Street (a local branch of the Indiana Main Street program dedicated to the revitalization of rural downtown business districts) has produced thirty-three 12” x 18” panels featuring historical photos of downtown buildings with captions stating what businesses were on each site through the years. Panels have been installed in the windows of buildings along East and West Main Street, South Center Street, and East and West Columbia Street thanks to the support and cooperation of downtown building and business owners.
The panels are part of Flora Main Street’s Pop-Up Gallery project which puts displays of local interest in storefront windows. The project was endorsed as a Legacy Project by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission. The 2016 theme is “Flora History is Indiana History.” The panels will remain in storefront windows through the Bicentennial year.
